As you know, Bonaire is a unique place combining environmental wonders, friendly people, great food, and opportunities for plenty of relaxation. It is the kind of place that feels like home after your first visit, and the kind of place that welcomes you back as if you were a member of the family.

But like many places, Bonaire is under pressure to change. Some of the changes offer great potential to be highly positive, like increased direct flights, but other possible changes may be negative, such as fishing rights being sold to European fishing fleets.

Support Bonaire, Inc. is a U.S. 501(c)(3) organization that provides financial and non-financial support to educational, social, and environmental charitable organizations and projects on Bonaire. The good news for U.S. citizens is that all donations to Support Bonaire, Inc. are tax deductible in the U.S.

There are many non-government charitable organizations on Bonaire that strive to keep Bonaire a great place to visit and live. The Foundation Preservation Klein Bonaire focused on raising awareness and money to help purchase Klein Bonaire and insure it will never be developed. The Donkey Sanctuary helps care for and protect the donkeys that roam Bonaire. Sister Maria Hoppner Foundation provides help to kids who don’t have good home-lives. Jong Bonaire gives kids something to do after school while helping them learn new skills. STINAPA focuses on managing the national parks and insuring people have access while protecting the resources for future visitors.

Just like the United States, the government on Bonaire can not possibly support all the organizations necessary to help keep Bonaire such a great place. In the United States, about 90% of funding for charitable organizations is from individuals, not corporations or government. The non-government charitable organizations on Bonaire are no different. They need the help of individuals to continue and expand the important work they do to for Bonaire.

But until recently it has not been possible to get a U.S. tax deduction for donations made to most of Bonaire’s charitable organizations. Now, with Support Bonaire, Inc., this has changed.
